Perhaps the only place on earth where thoughts about the best way to cook bacon intersect with contemplation of the aerodynamics of heavy-truck wheels is in the fertile brain of Jon Fleck.

Nearly 20 years ago, Fleck and his 8-year-old daughter, Abbey, concocted a kitchen utensil, the Makin Bacon, that ended up on Wal-Mart’s shelves – it’s still there – and made Fleck’s fortune.

Schneider Outfits Tractors With Deflecktor Wheel Covers

Schneider National, Inc., a premier provider of transportation, intermodal and logistics services, today revealed it is installing the Deflecktor Aero Wheel Cover on its entire tractor fleet. The innovative, aerodynamic wheel covers improve the mpg efficiency of the vehicle, with Schneider slated to realize an additional fuel savings of 1.8 million gallons annually as a result of implementing the Deflecktor on its fleet of over 12,000 tractors.

Financial Times: Climate Change Challenge – Wheel Covers That Cut Fuel Use

Deflecktors are cheap, lightweight covers fitten to lorry wheels, which improve fuel efficiency by reducing drag.

Fitted onto the eight wheels of a truck and its trailer, the Deflecktor cover —made of lightweight fabric—is calculated to cut fuel consuption by two percent. It works by covering the wheel holes to reduce turbulence as lorries move at speed. Inventor Jon Fleck points out that on the industrial-sized wheels, each of the holes is roughly the size of a car window.
